Types of Foam Cushion
There are lots more types of foam than you would imagine – the technology in this area has moved on quite a bit. The latest hi tech product is memory foam originally developed by NASA for astronauts to sleep on. This product molds itself to the users’ body and can be found in mattresses and cushions. Memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. A foam cushion made of memory foam may well support the user sitting on it more than a standard foam cushion and there are specialist neck and lumbar cushions made from memory foam. There are other specialist lumbar foam cushions designed to relieve pressure on the back and spine made from high density polyurethane and shaped for comfort.
At the basic end of the scale you can buy 16 by 16 inch squares of foam or alternatively you can buy a larger piece and cut it to size using a blade cutter or your electric carving knife. They are only 1 inch thick so for any density you would need to glue them together with spray adhesive. A good option for your outdoor furniture are foam cushions for both seat and back wrapped in polyester fiber and upholstered in spun polyester fabric. These are designed to keep you cool and are treated so they are stain resistant and won’t fade in the sunlight, a good choice for the patio or deck.
Foam cushions designed specifically for seating are more likely to be described as chair pads. They are thicker slabs of foam – 2 inches and often already covered usually in stain resistant easy clean fabric. There are even foam cushions with a layer of gel between two slabs of foam designed specifically to relieve pressure on your behind! One step further is a heated seat pad, an infrared heated foam cushion that you plug into a USB port on your computer. It will cost you about $30 which is certainly comfort while you work!
Choosing your foam cushion
- What type of chair – if you want cushions for your dining chairs then you may want to consider the depth of cushion needed. Too thick and your guests knees may be bumping the table. Too thin then there is no comfort to be gained. Outdoor seating needs weather proof cushions even if you intend to bring them in each night you are likely to store them in your garage or shed. Work chairs need different cushions that support your back and if you have a medical need an orthopedic cushion may be the solution.
- Function of the cushion – if your foam cushion is purely decorative for example a scatter cushion for your sofa, then you will spend money on the cover rather than the cushion itself. There are plenty of covered cushions available and the choice then is one of coordinating with your décor. If you are looking for serious comfort then memory foam cushions would be a good choice. They can be contoured and vary in thickness but will provide an additional degree of comfort not available in standard foam cushions.
Foam cushions that need to provide lumbar support or relieve pressure for someone sitting for long lengths of time will need to be either memory foam or foam/gel combinations or specialist designed foam. Your coverings will range from wipe down fabrics, chenille, suede or vinyl which is easy clean but can look a bit like diner furniture!
- Cost – how much do you want to pay for your foam cushions? At the cheapest end you can buy foam, cut it to size and sew covers for it yourself. This will only cost a few dollars per cushion. The luxury memory foam cushion or specialist orthopedic cushion can cost as much as $45 per cushion.
